Zürichseecup 201510/6/2015 Zürichseecup is one of the biggest sailing events at our lake. It brings together all clubs in the region and there’s serious prize money to win. That money goes to the clubs’ junior sailing teams. Each club forms a team consisting of an optimist, a dinghy (420, 29er, Laser) and a yacht. My club had three teams in the race and I was in a team with a yacht sailed by my coach Sebastian, my dad and the very nice owner. We trained quite a bit on the Melges 24 and we all enjoyed it very much. I think we really did a good job and I’d like to know how well we would do were we to sail against other Melges. We also enjoyed the regatta, even though we had absolutely no chance to beat the much bigger Onyx, Esse and X35. Some Onyx and Esse we could actually beat but our ranking was quite miserable still – boat size was not taking into account in a yardstick style. I also didn’t do too well myself on my optimist. We only had two races in very light winds and in each race I started too early, needing to do a 360. The race course was very short so I could not make up for my mishap and ended up 7th of 16 optimists.
My older brother Niklas did much better, coming in a 2nd optimist and as 4th team, winning a very nice prize money that will I guess be spent on our boat park :-). I am hoping for strong winds and I am looking forward to do camping with my SSTR5 sailing team!
