We have sailed the International Swiss Optimist Swiss Championships Oberhofen at Lake Thun last week. The event was incredibly well organized by Regattaclub Oberhofen. We unfortunately had very little wind and what we had was very shifty… Things did not work particularly well for me. I need to learn how defend my starting position in a very strong fleet. I came in 116th of 190 participants from eleven countries, 54th of 112 Swiss and 11th of 39 in my age class, this time 4th (instead of 2nd as usually) Swiss Opti B :-(.
I returned from Oberhofen in a good mood anyway since my teammate Jonas became 8th overall, being the 5th Swiss optimist, beating kids that will sail the World Championships this year!!! This is incredible, he started sailing just 2 ½ years ago!!! We sailed the open Swiss teamrace championships prior to the fleet races. We started as SC Stäfa team since my teammates Jonas and Niklas and I fromthat club. We were helped by Nik who is a member of Segelclub Enge. We managed to get into the gold group during round Robin. We also beat the Danish team in the gold fleet by a small margin. The Danes were quite surprised to be beaten by a club team they had never heard of, and even more so since my brother and I speak Danish very well implying that their “secret” communication before the start has not been very secret anyway ;-). Our SC Stäfa team came in 7th overall of 16 teams. It was great fun and we improved our teamrace skills a lot. Jürg von Allmen again shot great photos - I post a few of them below. We are hence returning to Lake Thun. I am hoping for better winds… and much improved starts.
