First Regatta Win31/5/2015 I was lucky enough to win my first regatta ever last weekend - in my new MacLaughlin optimist! OK, it was only a regional one. But anyway, I really like my first gold medal. We sailed "Saffainseli-Cup" that was organized by one of the large sailing clubs around the Lake of Zurich, my home lake.
It was the first regatta in a year that I sailed with my sailing club and not with my talent team. We were eleven kids from my club and it was really cool to have them around! We went by rib in the morning , that was a very special way of getting to the regatta spot. We sailed five races, four in good wind on Sat. and one in shifty and weak winds an Sun. My brother came in fourth, basically because I had an OSC in the last race ;-(. My fellow talent team member Nik became 2nd. Coming up next is the Zürichsee Cup 2015 where teams (an Optimist, a 420, a Laser, or a 29er and a yacht) from different Lake Zurich sailing clubs sail against each other. My sailing club is the defender of the trophy. I will sail both my optimist and the team yacht, joint with my father and my coach Sebastian Beer. Looking forward to it!!!

My first DYR has been a big adventure. I have never sailed in such steep and big waves before – and I struggled quite a big to keep my boat afloat. The first two regatta days went very well. We had between 10 and 15 knots and the waves were still moderate. I came in 35th, 11th, 9th (but I got an UFD ;-)), 25th, 39th, 26th and 38th. On day three and four the wind picked up to between 18 and 25 knots, really big waves and strong gusts. I had to give up after the first race (50th) on Saturday. On Sunday, I finished all races but did not keep the time limit in the final one after I capsized three times – yet another DNF. In the other two races I became 51th and 37th. I ended up in the “Ivory fleet” and as 296th overall of 413 participants from 15 countries and as 66th Optimist Benjamin among 126 other Benjamins. The Benjamins category did, however, also include kids that were a year older than I. My ranking of course is a disappointment. Anyway, I think I did learn a lot and it is clear to me that I need to train more in big waves. DYR was the last regatta I sailed with my 23 years old Nordest opti. I am hoping to pass it on to my little sister who just started sailing the optimist. Zum Bearbeiten hier klicken. The Swiss Optimist ranking for the season 2014/2015 is out: I came in 51th out of 78. It’s a bit strange that there are around 110 kids at each national regatta but only so few in the overall ranking. Anyway, I am second in my age group, Opti-Benjamin, a whopping 30 places behind # 1 (but I am hoping to come closer with my new opti :-)) and 20 places in front of # 3. I ranked 66th of 94 (where are all the others gone?) in 2014 overall and 4th among the Opti-Benjamins.
I received a very nice trophy at the Swiss Optmist general assembly in August (see below). The new season starts with the Swiss Championships in Oberhofen in the first week of August. Here’s the ranking: http://www.optimist.ch/Archive/Saison14_15/PMClass2015final.pdf. Now on my way to the Dutch Youth Regatta in Workum :-) :-) :-). The final national Optimist regatta of this season was sailed in Pully at Lake Geneva. It was a great disappointment for me. No wind until the afternoon on Saturday, then wind around 16:00… but also lots of rain – was that the reason the jury did not let us go out and race? On Sunday very light and heavily shifting winds, it even shifted by 180 degrees in the third and final race but the jury let us continue…
I again was the second in my age group but only 60th overall. I am looking forward to the Dutch Youth Regatta next week!!! AuthorMy name is Simon Kaiser and I simply love sailing. |
